In essence, this non-fiction book is meant to help a writer unleash his/her creative muse. From its description on Amazon.com, it is a thought-provoking and holistic guide to creative productivity. The kind of readers it targets are, naturally, those who write – these may be journalists, creative writers and those who write for a living. On the back cover of the book, it is stated that Tom Evans specialises in removing writer’s block and mentoring other authors. There is a link to his website, www.thebookwright.com. A quick visit to the website clearly suggests that the author has tremendous experience in the publishing industry and is, therefore, an authority in this field.

 

The cover design for this book is quite ingenious: it shows someone holding a spray can with the words, ‘Writer’s Unblocker – Use liberally’ printed thereon. This unique design captivates one’s attention immediately and will surely make many people pick up the book.

 

‘Blocks’ is divided into 21 sections and begins with a Preamble. The author then goes on to explain how this book should be read. He has taken the trouble to insert exercises that the reader should undertake after each chapter; doing these exercises helps the reader to fully appreciate and understand the theories Tom Evans is trying to share.

 

Of particular interest is Chapter 13. This chapter is entitled ‘Reader-Centric Writing’. Tom Evans gives an example of the opening line of a story. Then, he shows the reader how to expand on the initial idea and before you know it, you’re drawn into the short tale; in his words, ‘[s]o with one simple premise in a single sentence, that of someone in trouble, you can completely change the point and direction of the story.’

 

In conclusion, ‘Blocks’ is certainly a 154-page, compact paperback that is well-worth the retail price of $25.00 (as listed on Amazon.com). Anyone who is interested in writing, be it for pleasure or a living, should invest in. No one puts it better than the author himself when he says, ‘[t]his book is not about creative writing per se but this is a great example of how to easily get around a block in your writing. Simply look at what you are writing about from another point of view.’
