MESSAGE FROM ANEETA

Dear [FIRSTNAME],

We have a new columnist, Rachel Manship. Her column is called 'Get Published' and in her own words, "...I was thinking that for each column, I would write about the publishing opportunities in a different city." To read more about her and her first piece, scroll down and you'll find the link to her column.

Tomorrow, I will send you another email. It contains information about a book which I feel you'll benefit from, especially if you're interested in publishing options. So please keep an eye out for that email.

The winner of a Billy Harris's Travel Journal, Under the Ledge is Zoe Gregg. Congratulations! Zoe, please contact Billy at moody_harris@yahoo.com to collect your copy of this travel journal. I have nothing to offer this time for the contest. If you'd like to offer something, please send me an email at editor@howtotellagreatstory.com

There are new interviews, new pieces from our columnists and, therefore, lots to read.

Here's to your storytelling success.

10 Steps to Keeping an On-going Journal

Where do comedians, novelists, and playwrights get the raw material for their writings? From life, of course! Writers know that the anecdotes of the day, conversations overheard, and experiences, feelings, and subtleties of a moment may be the seeds of a short story, or the building blocks of a novel, or the spark for a magazine article. Keeping a journal keeps all these important morsels handy and ready to use when the appropriate time appears.

BLOW YOUR OWN TRUMPET

People are most important - interview with Jodi Webb

Excerpts ...

Jodi: ...My first day of work at a newspaper a co-worker told me “Just remember, no one reads the bylines except your mother.” It’s true. So some of the most memorable pieces for me are ones where people actually took the time to write a letter or email and tell me they liked the piece. The most memorable ones for me were the ones that were memorable for my readers. But those contacts with readers are few and far between!

GET PUBLISHED

Published in Perth

Excerpts ...

I honestly believe that Perth gets a bad rap from the rest of Australia. I have lived in Perth for almost eight years now and am tired of hearing comparisons to the more established eastern states of Sydney and Melbourne. Out of curiosities sake, I took a trip to Sydney in my previous uni holidays just to see what all the fuss was about. I was expecting London nightlife, New York traffic and Parisian shopping. Instead of the cosmopolitan paradise I was told to expect, I was disappointed with concrete jungles, derelict houses and park benches loaded with the homeless and the hopeless. Needless to say, I was far from impressed.

“What can you do? How many times have you been asked that question? But you never gave it any serious thought going by your usual answer: “Well, I am good with figures, and the computer especially, Word Perfect and Excel. Good answer, but how result oriented is it?

PAYING MARKETS FOR STORYTELLERS

African American Literary Journals

Excerpts ...

Although I don't live in the United States, I have been given an impression of American culture from television, movies, the Internet and so on. It is clear to an outsider that African Americans have had a large influence over American culture. Musically there's rap music, blues, jazz, soul etc. In television you've got Oprah Winfrey. Movies you've had blaxploitation, Spike Lee, actors like Will Smith, Morgan Freeman, Samuel L Jackson and so on. When it comes to literature, the contributions of black Americans is not so obvious to the outside observer, so I decided to take a closer look

ZODIAC'S CHILDREN

Cancer's Child

Excerpts ...

Everyone always says that Cancer’s children are moody and they grow up to be moody adults. I have to disagree. All of the Cancers that I have ever met were rather stable emotionally speaking. They can be a bit volatile when they feel attacked and they are like a lioness protecting those they love, but they are not moody while doing so. They are not as short-tempered as an Aries and not as long-tempered as a Taurus. They are not as sensitive as a Pisces and not as insensitive as a Sagittarius.

1000 REVIEWS

The Curious Incident of The Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon

Excerpts

... For me, this novel is a cross between a murder-mystery novel and a literary one. For one, the plot of this story is very much in the style of a whodunit – throughout, the reader is kept guessing about the answer to the question, “Who murdered this dog?” All the clues are placed in the appropriate places in the novel, the characters are defined and dialogue genuine. And yet, the style of writing is so unique:...

TELL EVERYONE ABOUT

Write It, Self-Publish It, Sell It

With two self-published novels under his belt (one of which was shortlisted for the Portico Literary Prize) Bill Keeth recently self-published Write It Self-Publish It Sell It ISBN 978 0 9558863 0 0 in response to other writers’ enquiries as to what exactly is entailed in taking the self-publishing route.

In this robustly written testament to his achievement, the author encourages the reader to avoid the pitfalls and emulate his personal success, relating, often in humorous fashion, how he himself wrote, self-published and marketed his books (2,000 copies and counting!) via book launches, booksignings and presentations, in addition to placing them with the major bookstores and public libraries
