Hello Storyteller,

It was really lovely to receive an email from one of my subscribers where she said she enjoyed the newsletter and was worried that she'd not received the May edition. INFOSYNTHESIS

Tell them the right story

Have you ever found yourself in a tight corner where you have to quickly convince another person about your message; to persuade someone and get that business; to convince and get approval or co-operation; or to establish your professional integrity? Needless to say, telling a story will get you instant results and it is even more important to tell the right story. Let me illustrate this with a recent personal experience I encountered with a group of workshop participants.

Jack's Fables

St. Peter

You load sixteen tons an' what do you get?
Another day older and deeper in debt.
St Peter don't you call me cause I can't go:
I owe my soul to the company store. *

‘Uncle’ Peter was born into an ordinary family, lived in an ordinary street, and ended up after leaving school doing an ordinary job.

Storytellers Nuts and Bolts

Single or Double Quotation Marks?

Many people get mixed up when it comes to using single and double quotation marks. This is not surprising when you consider that different countries have different preferences. And to add more confusion, quotation marks are also known by other names, such as inverted commas and occasionally aerial commas.

BLOW YOUR OWN TRUMPET!

Front of the Class - interview with Cheryl Wright

Excerpts ...

Cheryl:  I’ve always known I was born to be a writer, but tried to push the idea aside.  When I was in grade six, my teacher went on long service leave.  A hippy substitute teacher arrived.  I wasn’t too sure about him and moved to the back of the class.  After a few days he began reading poetry to us on a daily basis.  This was the springboard for discussions about the history of the poets, and ultimately, Australian history.  Down the track he also introduced short stories.

I’m convinced this teacher inspired my love of the written word.

And yes, I moved to the front of the class not long after he arrived!

Campfire Storytelling - interview with Evelyn Clark

Excerpts ...

Leanne: ... Stories help us make sense of the world. Our brains readily accept the information in the stories we hear, and then organize various bits of that information in ways that help us access those bits when needed

Burial At Sea by Khushwant Singh

Excerpts ...

Burial At Sea is not a big book. Less than 200 pages it is a short tale and on the jacket cover of the book, a summary of the story is given; it states:

After Nehru, Victor Jai Bhagwan is Mahatma Gandhi’s favourite Indian – a brilliant young man with the temperament of a leader and fiercely committed to his country.

Dear Aneeta

I am interested in a story telling workshop or camp this summer either near Cleveland OHIO or somewhere in W VA.  I live in Florida but had planned to attend in WVA this summer.  I found out recently it is a weekend and it is in October when I'll probably be back in Florida.  I desire to become a story teller.
