Dear [FIRSTNAME],
If you tried to send me email in response to my request for storytellers
to interview and could not get through, I'm so sorry. I'd like to blame
the computer and say it's the fault of technology but, alas, it was my
own mistake. I typed the wrong email address. Nevertheless, there were a
few people who realised my mistake and tried again. Hence, we have new
interviews under 'Blow Your Own Trumpet!' posted and a few more on the
way. If you'd like to be interviewed, here's the correct email you can
use to contact me:
editor@howtotellagreatstory.com.

ARTICLES FOR STORYTELLERS |
Storytellers Unite -
Let's All Spread the Word!
... It is time that
we unite and tell
everyone with whom
we come into contact
about storytelling.
Whether it is at the
water cooler, during
lunch in the
cafeteria, in line
at the post office
and/or grocery
store, at networking
events or during
meetings of groups,
clubs and/or
organizations to
which we belong, we
need to spread the
word. Why? Because
so many people have
no idea how
powerful,
captivating,
enthralling and
important
storytelling is.
They don't even have
a clue of what it
is. And, if this
continues,
professional
storytelling will
remain an
undervalued and
misunderstood
profession of the
few.

Driver, Storyteller - interview with Dennis Burnier Smith
Excerpts ...
Aneeta: How did you first get into writing and
storytelling?
Dennis: Because of the career that I followed
in the haulage industry, numerous and diverse things happened along the
way. When I would come home at the week-end I would regale my friends
and associates with humorous stories and escapades that I had
experienced or seen. The people that made up my audience for these
impromptu revelations often commented that I should write a book
concerning all these adventures and mis-adventures. After much
deliberation and once I had retired and had some time on my hands I
decided to do just that.

Cousins and Taxis - interview with Teh Saw Im
Excerpts ...
Saw Im: I had always been
interested in writing, so it wasn’t a case of ‘becoming’. I suppose, all the way
through school, both as a student and teacher, I had been connected with
English. It was that link which urged me on. When I took up teaching as a
career, it was a question of choice, and the association with English was always
there.
Whenever I had gone to Penang, my aged
cousin would relate her experiences of her growing up in China, until she was
13, and then coming to Malaya (as it was then known). Like all new immigrants,
it was imagined that gold was easy to locate; instead, she ended up as a cabaret
girl. I found her stories most intriguing. They were like repeating
record-players, but always drawing you to listen to them. They were most
fascinating. Eventually, I decided, why not write them out, instead of just
making mental notes of them?

Do you remember your alma mater? I remember mine with
nostalgia always. Government College Umuahia, Abia State, Nigeria. That

Cheating the Ferryman
Harold had served in the war. He had escaped from
enemy custody more often in fact than in the fertile imagination of a Hollywood
script writer. When he was a young lad, he passed the scholarship exam to a
highly prestigious school, but never got there.

Piece
of Gold
Once there was a holy man who sat with his begging
bowl in hand at the entrance to a village. A peasant traveling down the
road into the village stopped to stare at the beggar. “Aren’t you tired
of being poor?” the peasant asked the holy man.

STORYTELLER'S NUTS AND BOLTS |
Varying
Your Sentence Lengths
New writers
often make the mistake of assuming the best pieces of writing are filled with
long, complex, jumbled sentences. Not true. If you want to keep your readers’
attention, try varying your sentence lengths. Otherwise you could bore or even
intimidate your readers..

Aries' Child
Excerpts ...
Aries is the sign of the
entrepreneur. Think of those traits that make up a successful
entrepreneur… they are bright and hard working, most comfortable working as a
one man show, love to be the first to discover and present things to the world,
and rarely allow others to dominate them. Now imagine these traits in a
child. Your Aries child will most likely be energetic, innovative, and
will have a deep desire to be #1 in life. Aries children remind me of a
cross between Leos and Capricorns. They often have Leo’s need for the
limelight and Capricorn’s workaholic nature. Like Leos, Aries are fire
signs and are therefore very dynamic personalities with no desire whatsoever to
be bossed around. While goats symbolize Capricorn, rams symbolize Aries.
Both are strong climbers and will butt heads with you when provoked.

How
about supporting the Egyptian Mau Rescue Organization (EMRO) and do
