Dear [First Name],

SUBSCRIBER CONTEST
I have added more than 50 new articles on
storytelling to the database and I hope that you'll find them
useful reading. Also, there are three new interviews posted
under 'Blow Your Own Trumpet' - Christian Buckley, Skye Thomas
and Chris King. The interviewees range from a
person who is promoting and selling a mangosteen based product,
an astrologer and
a
person who was once a model. All three people have provided
me with some very interesting stories about their work. Please,
do go and read the interviews with these interesting
storytellers.
I got rid of the blog, Heartbeat, and replaced it
with a forum. The reason for this change is that I found a blog
to be rather one-sided - all my views and no interaction. My
intention in setting up this website, from the start, has been
to garner more interest in storytelling and encourage
interaction between storytellers; hence, the change. It is my
hope that when A Storyteller's Forum
(which is what I've called the Forum) is complete, storytellers
will have a place to share their stories, get feedback and maybe
help others. I would really appreciate any help in setting up
this forum (in terms of suggesting suitable categories or even
volunteering to moderate a forum or two). Here's the link to the
forum:
http://howtotellagreatstory.com/phpBB2/index.php
If you've got any ideas, please do not hesitate
to contact me - just send an email to
editor@howtotellagreatstory.com.
I've also replaced the Tips for Storytellers with Prompts For
Storytellers. There are two reasons for this: one, I've run out of tips!
Secondly, I hope that with the prompt, you'll get down to it and write
your own fascinating story. Remember, we're still offering to pay for
fascinating stories we receive for What's Your
Fascinating Story?
Here's to your storytelling success.

PROMPTS TO TELL YOUR GREAT STORY
...
In line with the release of Da Vinci Code, this edition's prompt for
you to tell your great story is this :
Have you just learned a secret that is likely to change the world?
You can only share this secret with three people. Write about your
secret and how you intend to reveal it to these three people.

WHAT'S YOUR
FASCINATING STORY?
IT WAS PROSTATE CANCER
H. Steven Robertson
This is being written to record my experience at having been diagnosed
with prostate cancer and the ensuing tests and treatment. It is
intended as information as well as to help any of the other men who have
been diagnosed with the disease. I plan to send it to the American
Cancer Society and the AARP magazine. The names have been changed
to protect the private identities of the individuals involved.

BLOW YOUR OWN TRUMPET!!
Mangosteens,
Adhocracy and a Working Life
- an interview with Christian Buckley.
Excerpts ...
Christian:
... These
days, I do have one very active side project – I am a distributor of a
mangosteen health supplement called XanGo. I had been using the product
for over a year with great results, and decided to start a small company
to market the product. ...
Aneeta:
Of course, I was attracted to the kind of work you do
because I chanced upon a post your blog,
Life is Work
entitled Interviewing is about Storytelling. For
the benefit of my readers, can you please explain why
interviewing is storytelling?
Christian:
Both hiring manager and job candidate have a story to
tell. The interview is just as much about the hiring
manager telling a compelling story about why the
candidate should want to come to work for that company,
as it is about the candidate wanting to tell a
compelling story about why she should be hired.

Skye's The Limit - an interview
with Skye Thomas.
Excerpts ...
Aneeta:
Now, on to my favourite part – astrology. I must confess
that I religiously follow the things you write. Tell me
a little about how you came to be as astrologer, what it
is you do and how can my readers and … ahem, me, contact
you should we wish to commission a report from you?
Skye:
The astrology thing has exploded beyond anything I
imagined! The kids and I just sort of shake our
heads in amazement. I’m supposed to become this
motivational speaker and writer helping the world to
deal with their self-confidence issues and to teach
people how to get along with each other, but what people
really want me to do is tell them that tomorrow will be
okay.
I started
studying astrology when I was about ten years old and it
was always my favorite hobby. I never thought of
myself as a professional or anything. I just found
it fascinating how you could pretty much find everything
about a person’s personality right there hidden in their
birth wheel. As I became a teenager, I started
comparing how different signs got along with each other
romantically and in families. By the time my kids
were dating, I would pull charts on whomever they
brought home and would predict for them if the
relationships would work out or not. I did the
same thing for friends and family.

King ... or Queen? - an interview
with Chris King.
Excerpts ...
Aneeta: On to the issue of writing. Please
explain your philosophy towards this activity and
perhaps, you could give some advice to my readers, who
are mainly from Asia and Africa.
Chris: As I mentioned before, I always wanted to
be a writer. I think that this is why I am so enamoured
with the Internet. The very best advice I have received
and will give about writing is to do lots of it. I love
sharing information, so the writing seldom seems like a
chore. Other advice to aspiring writers is: be
conversational, rather than proper (you don’t want a lot
of errors, but you do want to be easy to read); be
brief; write about topics that you are passionate about;
enjoy the writing and your readers will enjoy reading
what you have written.
Aneeta: What great advice. Thank you. Onto the
subject we have a mutual interest in – storytelling.
Please describe your interest in this area and any
advice you may have.
Chris: I have always loved stories and telling
stories, so in 1989 as an active speaker who used
stories, I made the decision to add professional
storytelling to my “Portfolio Career.” I feel strongly
that everyone is a storyteller, whether or not
professionally, and can benefit from using the power of
storytelling. Again, only tell stories you feel
passionate about; collect your family stories (I have a
storytelling friend who tells us, “When an older person
dies, a library dies with them.”); share stories with
everyone; read stories; listen to stories; and practice,
practice, practice.

ARTICLES FOR STORYTELLERS
Storytelling in the Classroom - Concepts and Activities
Concepts
It
is empowering for a child to be able to express his or
her thoughts and feelings articulately through oral
language.
The
art of storytelling can be an enjoyable tool for
practicing both listening skills and verbal expression.
Teachers
can effectively model interesting, expressive language
for students to emulate.

On Building Community Through
Storytelling
By Marni
Gillard
When teachers and students meet each other they bring
histories along. Acknowledging those histories - simply
showing each other moments of our lives - helps everyone
be more his or her true self. Conversely, keeping the
secret of who we really are or even waiting, cautiously,
to see how much of our true self is safe to expose,
takes time and energy away from learning. If children
are encouraged to honor who they are uniquely, they are
more apt to honor each other. One way to share our
uniquenesses while at the same time discovering
similarities is
STORYTELLING.

Storytelling - The Great Motivator of People
In a data-driven world,
facts and figures are the order of the day in sales calls, employee meetings,
board rooms, and political assemblies. Traditionally, when a person is trying to
convince someone else to do something they use the logic of benefits and
features - long the sacred domain of anyone in sales.
And they are missing
the boat.
What truly moves us as
human beings, what prompts us into action, is emotion. Imagination is the
conduit of emotion and well-crafted storytelling carries the imagination.

You Don't
Need Inspiration!
BY SHERY MA BELLE
ARRIETA-RUSS
Or do you?
Writers write. You shouldn't wait around for inspiration
to come. But sometimes, there are days you can't get
anything written down. Or you're at a loss for words.
You can't think of anything to write. You don't have any
idea what to write about.
And then you end up believing you're having writer's
block.
You end up believing it too much, you stop writing
altogether. You might even think of yourself as not a
real writer.
And all because of what? You think your muse deserted
you? You think you have writer's block?
Think again! You don't need inspiration to write! What
you do need are prompts to help get your writer's mind
working and your hands writing or typing.

Cut The Strings - The
True Story of a Soul Reclaimed
I was a little stunned when Lynn sent to me a copy of this ebook. I
never expected it and I read it with much interest. My attention was
grabbed right from the start. It was these words which set me reading
this entire ebook in one go:
Bryn
Jones, who wrote the Preface used these words when signing off: ‘proud
friend to Lynn and Glen Grocott.’ ...
