MESSAGE FROM ANEETA

Hello Storyteller,

The last two weeks have really flown by, don't you think?

Well, I've lots of things to share with you. First, Eric sends his apologies as he is unable to submit a story for Infosynthesis this time round. In StoryAsia, I was inspired to write about self-publishing in Malaysia; there are new interviews with Karen Chace and James Bonnet - you'll just have to read the interviews to find out which one of them tells a story. There are new reviews and some new freebies posted. There are more announcements in 'Tell Everyone About' - I'm sure you've heard of training programme. But, have you heard of Virtual Training programmes? Well, I received an email invitation from Dr. Cherie Carter-Scott and I suggest you click on the link in 'Tell Everyone About' to find out what this means.

The winner of a copy of Eve Neuhaus's Journey To Mythaca is Cathryn Potter. Cathryn, please contact Eve at eveneuhaus@journeytomythaca.com to claim your copy of this book. For this edition of the newsletter, I'm going to offer the digital version of Snapshots! again. Click here to enter this contest. If you have copies of your own works which you'd like to offer for our contest, please send me an email about this.

I hope you enjoy the information shared.

Here's to your storytelling success.

INFOSYNTHESIS

Tell them the right story

Have you ever found yourself in a tight corner where you have to quickly convince another person about your message; to persuade someone and get that business; to convince and get approval or co-operation; or to establish your professional integrity? Needless to say, telling a story will get you instant results and it is even more important to tell the right story. Let me illustrate this with a recent personal experience I encountered with a group of workshop participants.

Working on a dream - self-publishing in Malaysia

Since publication of The Banana Leaf Men, I have been asked the same question many times, “How much did it cost?” Also, I’ve been asked to share my know-how about the publishing industry here in Malaysia, the most recent being a request from Sharanya Manivannan.

Jack's Fables

Powerless Beyond Measure

Bell turned in for work as usual. Grim and grey, waiting for the inevitable.

By mid-morning, enough was enough for Blue. Kids bouncing off the walls, for whom the only meaningful activity was texting your mate across the room to see if s/he was still functioning.

Storytellers Nuts and Bolts

Single or Double Quotation Marks?

Many people get mixed up when it comes to using single and double quotation marks. This is not surprising when you consider that different countries have different preferences. And to add more confusion, quotation marks are also known by other names, such as inverted commas and occasionally aerial commas.

BLOW YOUR OWN TRUMPET!

LadyBug, StoryBug – interview with Karen Chace

Excerpts ...

Karen: A storyteller share a story? I thought you would never ask!

The Difference Between Heaven and Hell

Many years ago a wealthy man asked a wise Buddhist to see the difference between Heaven and Hell. The wise man obliged and when the gates of Hell were thrown open their eyes fell upon a magnificent hall. Before them lay a table set with the finest china and crystal, each plate sumptuously filled with food and fruits from the far corners of the world. Every goblet was filled to the brim with sweet wine. Around the lavish table men and women sat, but their faces were distorted in agony, their voices rang out in anguish, they were malnourished, emaciated.

StoryMaker - Interview with James Bonnet

Excerpts ...

James:  I make a distinction between storytelling and storymaking. Storytelling is the retelling of a tale that already exists. Storymaking involves the invention and creation of a new story. My work is primarily concerned with the creation of new stories, either fiction or non-fiction, that will become story films or novels. Applied to a film, one might say that the screenwriter is the storymaker and the director is the storyteller, and sometimes the same person functions in both capacities.

ZODIAC'S CHILDREN

Cancer's Child

Excerpts ...

Everyone always says that Cancer’s children are moody and they grow up to be moody adults.  I have to disagree.  All of the Cancers that I have ever met were rather stable emotionally speaking.

ARTICLES FOR STORYTELLERS

What To Look For In A Writing Mentor

(The names of the authors in this article have been changed to protect their privacy.)

First of all, you have to decide what you need.

Look at your writing critically, decide where you are deficient, define the areas where you need to sharpen your skills, and outline the specific writing goals you want to achieve.

And by specific I mean very specific.

It Works by Ronald G. Miller

Excerpts ...

It Works is a non-fiction piece of work and can safely be categorised under the self-help genre. On the back cover of the book, it is stated that Ronald Miller ‘shows us how to achieve all our dreams and desires through’ mind power and goal setting, the process of goal setting and tools and resources for successful goal setting.

The Mee Street Chronicles: Straight Up Stories of a Black Woman's Life by Frankie Lennon

Excerpts ...

Autobiographies are a dime a dozen, and going by the school of thought that everyone has a story in them, ergo, everyone has an autobiography in them. But what then makes a memoir powerful? Surely, the thoughts of figures who have made significant achievements are of interest to others.

Ochre As The Earth by Sharanya Manivannan

Excerpts ...

Sometimes I think you would have to be absolutely androgynous not to want to make love to me.

As far as opening lines go, this one will forever stand out in my mind. They were the ones uttered by Sharanya Manivannan during her solo show, Ochre As The Earth.
