ARTICLES FOR STORYTELLERS |
How to Use Storymaps
When Learning Both Oral and Written Stories
Here's some of the
information that I use
in study guides after a
residency. This is a
compilation over the
years of doing
storytelling residencies
in the schools of
information I've gleaned
here and there and just
plain ole "Eureka"
moments. I'm assuming
you can picture the
storymap from this
description. I always
draw an example for the
study guide. I'm also
including guidelines on
learning a story for
telling that work for
both written or oral
stories. When teaching
creative writing
residencies, I always
start participants
drawing a storymap. No
words until they have
told the story to
someone — well, maybe a
word here or there, but
no phrases! Can you tell
I really believe in
storymaps?

Patter! - interview with James Nelson-Lucas
Excerpts ...
Aneeta: When did your interest in storytelling
start?
James: Well, I could say when I was five. My
mother hired a magician for my birthday. I was taken. I mean, a grown up
getting paid to be on stage. What a good deal. So I asked to learn at
his knee. By the time I was six I was getting paid as a magician. What
does that have to do with storytelling? Patter! Patter is what the
magician says while he performs. In reality, patter is just a series of
short stories designed to distract the audience from the slight of hand.
Form there I spent years acting, writing, etc.
.

The Storyteller's Garbe - interview with Linda Garbe
Excerpts ...
Aneeta: Again, under the ‘Story Power’ Tab,
you’ve got these fabulous sub-headings. I’ll not ask you to explain them
all. But, I am exceedingly fascinated with Wasabi Tsunami. Can
you please describe this?
Linda: Wasabi Tsunami is about the power of
each word we use. I have seen the difference one word can make. Use the
wrong word and you lose your audience. Wrong words are ones that cause
your audience to stop listening to you. You can have the audience in the
palm of your hand and suddenly use a word that causes them to stop
hearing you and begin thinking about something else. The word has
another meaning for them .

I
Can and I Will (2): A
story of ability and willpower
Can you always do what you are willing to do? That was
the question we tried to answer in the first part of this story. For me,
years ago, I could not. But now I can safely say and demonstrate that,
“I Can and I Will.”

Piece
of Gold
Once there was a holy man who sat with his begging
bowl in hand at the entrance to a village. A peasant traveling down the
road into the village stopped to stare at the beggar. “Aren’t you tired
of being poor?” the peasant asked the holy man.

STORYTELLER'S NUTS AND BOLTS |
Varying
Your Sentence Lengths
New writers
often make the mistake of assuming the best pieces of writing are filled with
long, complex, jumbled sentences. Not true. If you want to keep your readers’
attention, try varying your sentence lengths. Otherwise you could bore or even
intimidate your readers..

Taurus' Child
Excerpts ...
Whenever I think of
Taurus, I think of Ferdinand the Bull. He prefers to sit peacefully in a
beautiful field of clover happily munching away the hours. However, wave
that red flag and he is charging with horns down at full speed like a
locomotive. It is just as difficult to stop him once he has begun charging
as it is to get him up out of the clover to begin with. Such is the case
with your Taurus child.

Ibu Maluku: The Story of Jeanne van Diejen
... Many books about the East
are centred around the countries where either the British or French were
colonial rulers – India, Singapore, Sri Lanka, to name a few. It is rare to read
a story that is based in an Asian country where the Dutch were colonial rulers.
So, I was intrigued by this book the moment I laid eyes on it. The cover image,
The Bay of Ternate by Antoine Payen, gives that visual impression of what it
must have been like when Jeanne first arrived in Ternate.

Cats? Love History?
How
about supporting the Egyptian Mau Rescue Organization (EMRO) and do
both? Our animal charity supports the protection and adoption of ancient
native Egyptian Mau cats from Egypt. These living antiquities have
existed from the Pharonic times and these previously worshipped cats are
now routinely poisoned by the Egyptian governement. EMRO is trying to
help them. If you wish to learn more or participate, please check out
our current GiveMeaning Project at
