Have yourself a green (ish) wedding

While it seems to be an in thing these days – green is the new black they say – a green wedding can be a challenge to the uninitiated. Here are some simple guidelines that could help you achieve this without busting the bank or going nuts in the process.

First things first, determine what green(ish) means to you. This will then help you decide how far you can go, bearing in mind that this has a direct bearing on budget as well.

When in doubt think local or think organic. Take flowers for example, I am a staunch advocate of using locally grown flowers. In Malaysia, there are countless options and one is spoilt for choice from orchids, to callas, roses, daisies, sunflowers and my favourite fun and flirty chrysanthemums these blooms come in a kaleidoscope of colours and I’ve only highlighted a handful of choices. If organically grown flowers are not readily available, do not opt for the option of having them shipped or flown in. The objective here is to reduce carbon footprint not create more.

When you make a choice to use local flowers in your wedding, you’ll also have a wonderful story to share with your guests. Then when the whole event is over, encourage your guests to take home some of the event flowers. What a great way to make a statement on sustainability!
