Of folks and their reactions
Flowers mean different things to different people. Most like them and some don’t care for them. Then, there are those who are indifferent. But everyone has a reaction - even the 'non-reaction' says something. Unfortunately, I seldom get to witness the reaction my flowers bring about.
While these creations are crafted and composed at 'Nook Flowers', I, as the florista, am not the person delivering them. As such, I lose out on seeing the look on people’s faces when they receive their blooms. I can’t help but be curious, especially if the flowers were ordered for an extra special event or they were meant to be a surprise.
Every time Siva, who delivers my flowers for me, returns to the store, he is asked the same questions:
“Did s/he like it?”
“What was her reaction?”
“Was s/he happy?”
Siva has gone through this routine so many times with me that he’s wizened up. Now, he starts talking before I get a chance to ask a single question. As he recounts what happened, I listen without interrupting him. These are some of this answers:
“Yes, she liked it very much.”
“She was so surprised she didn’t know what to say.”
“She was smiling from ear to ear and kept saying thank you to me”.
That last reaction never fails to amuse Siva: he gets the opportunity to tell the recipient not to thank him, but to thank the sender instead. This often gets him yet another laugh from the obviously very pleased recipient.
Those are the happy moments.
Then, there are those situations where we deliver flowers and expect no reaction at all. These are times of sorrow and the flowers we were commissioned to send, were meant to denote respect for one who has passed on.
I never ask Siva for a reaction from these events. There is no need to and unless it’s something out of the ordinary, he doesn’t tell me either.
That’s the thing with flowers – whether it’s a happy or sad occasion, they are required and needed. Nature’s beautiful creation that is so much a part of our day to day lives.
